Roller Network Help - How To Configure Microsoft Outlook 2007

The following example is provided for informational purposes only. We do not provide technical support for mail clients or officially support any specific mail client.

In this tutorial we will walk you through configuring Microsoft Outlook 2007 for use with Roller Network mail hosting. If you are using Outlook 2003, see its tutorial for instructions.

We support both IMAP and POP3 accounts, with or without SSL. We use and recommend IMAP ourselves because it always stores mail on the server (which is managed and backed up), supports folders, and easily lets multiple clients (webmail, PDA phones, work computer, home computer, etc.) have the same view of the mail box. POP3 is desirable if you're on a low bandwidth link or don't want to keep messages on the server.

Adding a new IMAP Account

To configure a new IMAP account in Outlook 2007 follow these steps.

Step 1

Open Outlook and click on the "Tools" menu and then "Account Settings".

Step 2

Under the Email tab of the Account Settings window that appears, click the New button.

Step 2 (additional)

If you already have existing email accounts configured you will see this window. Otherwise skip to Step 3. Choose "Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP" and click Next.

Step 3

Select "Manually configure server settings or additional server types" and click Next. Outlook's auto account setup will not work; we will enter this information in the next step.

Step 4

Choose "Internet E-Mail" and click Next.

Step 5

Fill out the email settings window as shown below. Your incoming server is mailbox.rollernet.us with outgoing server smtpauth.rollernet.us . Select IMAP (recommended) or POP3 as the account type. Substitute your real name, email address, username, and password in place of the examples. Ensure that the user name matches the email address. When done, click on the "More Settings" button.

DO NOT enable secure password authentication here or the login will fail!

Step 6

Name your new account under the "General" tab.

Step 7

Enable outgoing server authentication using the same settings as the incoming server under the "Outgoing Server" tab.

Step 8

Select TLS for both incoming and outgoing encrypted connections under the "Advanced" tab. Change the "Outgoing server (SMTP)" port number to 587.

The default of 25 for the outgoing server port may also work, but many service providers block port 25. We recommend using the designated submission port of 587.

Step 9

Click the OK button at the bottom of the settings window, then click Next in the add new email account window. The following window will appear:

Click on the Finish button to complete the new account setup. Your new IMAP account will appear in the folder list on the left hand side of the screen:

New mail in your IMAP account will appear in the Inbox here, not under Personal Folders. If you have any questions regarding configuring an IMAP account please contact technical support.

Adding a new POP3 Account

Configuring a new POP3 mail account follows the same steps as creating an IMAP account, however the screen in step 8 is slightly different. New mail for POP3 accounts are downloaded to Personal Folders. The POP3 configuration differences are shown below for your reference.

Step 8

In step 8 for a POP3 account, you can choose to leave messages on the server. POP3 messages left on the server are stateless which causes all messages to be downloaded if you connect from a different client. If you configure another client to delete/download all messages from a POP3 account they cannot be restored to the server. We only recommend using IMAP for server side storage.
